Making Recycling Make Sense
What happens after you throw something in a recycling bin?
Vireo brings the answer directly to schools.
Our K–8 educational outreach program gives students a hands-on look at what happens to the things they use every day from the moment they throw something away to what happens next. Students learn how recycling actually works, how materials are sorted and processed, what can and cannot be recycled, and how the choices they make every day can have an impact on the environment.
Instead of simply telling students to “recycle,” we show them why it matters and how to do it correctly.
What Students Learn
Where Does Our Waste Go?
Students follow the journey of everyday items after they leave their hands; exploring the difference between the recycling bin, trash, compost, reuse, and special recycling programs.
What Actually Happens When Something Is Recycled?
Students discover what happens inside the recycling system, including how materials are collected, sorted, processed, and turned into something new.
A plastic bottle might become another product.
A cardboard box can become new paper products.
A glass container can be processed into new glass.
Recycling isn't the end of an item's life — it's the beginning of another one.
What Goes Where?
Students learn how to make better decisions about everyday waste:
What belongs in the recycling bin
What belongs in the trash
What can be composted
What can be reused or donated
What requires special recycling or drop-off programs
Why putting the wrong items in the recycling bin can cause problems
Composting & Organic Waste
Students are introduced to the basics of composting and learn what happens to food and other organic materials when they're composted instead of thrown in the trash.
Special Materials
Students also learn that some items — including batteries, electronics, and other materials require different recycling processes and should never simply be placed in a regular recycling or trash bin.
The goal isn't to memorize a list of rules.
It's to teach students how to think about waste.
Plant a Tree Day
Take the Lesson Outside
Schools looking to take environmental education a step further can add a Plant a Tree Day to their Vireo experience.
Students step outside the classroom and become active participants in improving their own community. Together, students learn about trees, soil, ecosystems, and the role plants play in creating a healthier environment — then get their hands dirty planting trees they can watch grow for years to come.
